Medal - Ashes Cricket Tour 1993 (AD)

Other Details: A gilt medal featuring the Ashes Urn and an Australian Coat of Arms, issued to promote the 1993 Ashes tour of England. The Ashes tradition originated in England in August 1882, when an Australian cricket team defeated England, in England, for the first time. This prompted English journalist Reginald Brooks to write a mock obituary in The Sporting Times, saying that English cricket had died, and that the body would be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia. The joke continued, and it is suggested that Lady Clarke, wife of Sir William Clarke, President of the Melbourne Cricket Club, burnt her veil and presented the ashes (puporting to be a bail) to English Captain Ivor Bligh, who was playing with his team at the Clarke property in Sunbury, Rupertswood, on Christmas Eve 1882. - Description:
