Description Of Content:
Loading grain onto the SS 'Astralford'. This was the first ship to be loaded at the new pier at Portland. Bags of grain are being moved from a goods truck onto the ship using cranes. Several railway lines run along the pier. A horse is standing beside
the goods truck, and appears to be involved in the transfer of freight.

Railway trucks were worked and shunted on the pier by horses which had difficulty with the timber decking which became slippery under their hooves. The cleats were used successfully to provide traction for them.
