Enamelled metal pin comprising black outer circule and inner shape of pink/red ribbon, with pin at top. Inscribed 'WORLD AIDS DAY'. Produced for an Aids Awareness Campaign. Manufacturer unknown.
World Aids Day was founded in 1988 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise public awareness about HIV/AIDS issues, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS and for continued education and prevention initiatives. The World Aids Day organisation describes the red ribbon as 'an international symbol of AIDS awareness. It is worn by people all year round, and particularly around World AIDS Day, to demonstrate their support for people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. It is also a symbol of commitment to challenge the stigma and prejudice surrounding HIV/AIDS.'
Museum Victoria holds a collection documenting the material culture of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities in Victoria. In 2005 the Museum joined with the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives and the State Library of Victoria to conducted a survey of GLBT material culture in public and private collections in Victoria. - Circular enamelled metal pin with a black coloured outer ring and a red ribbon motif in the centre. Aside from the ribbon motif the centre parts of the pin are cut out, leving three small apertures. The pin on the reverse has a small safety stud.
