Other Details: A gold-plated medal issued by the Shire of Swan Hill to commemorate the sesquicentenary of Victoria in 1984-5 and of Swan Hill in 1986. It features a descriptive legend and the sesquicentenary logo. Swan Hill was visited by explorer Major Mitchell in 1836, and named after the swans on the river that disturbed him. Ten years later the first European property in the district was established, but it was not until the 1850s that Swan Hill began to develop as a major inland river port. When the river trade declined as railways extended the clearing of the Mallee for agriculture provided new economic opportunities. Swan Hill was declared a district in 1862 and a shire in 1871. A borough was separated from the Shire of Swan Hill in 1939, which became a city in 1965. On 20 January 1995 the Shire of Swan Hill, City of Swan Hill and part of the Shire of Kerang united to form the Swan Hill Rural City Council. - Description:
