Other Details: A gold plated medal issued by the Shire of South Gippsland to commemorate the sesquicentenary of Victoria in 1984-5. It features ta map of the Shire of South Gippsland with the Shire Seal, the motto 'youth today achievers tomorrow' and the sesquicentenary logo. The Shire of South Gippsland was first settled in the 1840s. It offered a diverse range of natural resources, and early activities included whaling, sealing, lime mining and timber cutting. In later decades the cattle and dairy industries benefited from the arrival of the railway connecting the area to Melbourne. In the later twentieth century the Shire's economic bases included a developing tourism industry. - Description:
