Other Details: Gold medal awarded to Dr Phillip G. Law in 1960 by the Royal Geographical Society of London. The Society was founded in London in 1830 and encompassed dramatic developments in British geography, exploration and discovery in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including people such as Livingstone, Stanley, Scott, Younghusband, Shackleton, Hunt and Hillary. Phillip Law himself was instrumental in the development of the Australian Antarctic Division and the ANARE programs, and led the expeditions that established Australia's three Antarctic stations: Mawson in 1954; Davis in 1957; and Casey in 1964. These expeditions and others led by Dr Law between 1954 and 1966 explored and mapped 5,000 kilometres of the coastline of the Australian Antarctic Territory. - Acquisition Information:
