The Australian & New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science aims to promote communication and interaction between scientists in different disciplines, to foster public interest in science and technology, and awareness of their role in everyday life, and to encourage the curiosity of young people in science.
The Australian & New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science was originally established in 1888 as the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. It published its own journal, the Australasian Association for Advancement of Science. In 1902 the Association established the Mueller Medal, in memory of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, government botanist of Victoria and a prodigious collector of botanic specimens. The medal is today awarded for research into anthropology, botany, geology or zoology.
ANZAAS was associated with the Australian Journal of Science and its successor, the magazine Search, founded in 1970. In 1998, Search became part of the new science magazine Australasian Science.
The records of ANZAAS are held at the National Library of Australia.
