Seaweed Crabs
Seaweed crabs are so well covered with vegetation that it is usually necessary to remove it in order to determine the species. Compared to the picture of the 'naked' crab, this highly adorned example barely resembles a crab at all.
Although usually a slow-moving crustacean which lurks amoungst weed or under rocks, Naxia aries individuals do not seem afraid to wander into full view. If alarmed, however, individuals risk losing their camouflage by scuttling quickly to safety. The extent of seaweed each crab has varies thus making each one quite unique.
How does the seaweed stay on the carapace? The legs and carapace are well provided with hooked hairs. The weed is fastened to the hooks by the base of the tuft or leaf, making the adornment appear natural.
