Systematics: Isopoda Family Sphaeromatidae
Distinguishing Characters:
The body, 6 mm long, is very flat, the head protruding from the front.
Habitat and Distribution:
This scale louse is found on red algae in shallow subtidal waters in South Australia,
Victoria and Tasmania.
General Biology:
These tiny isopods are well adapted to hiding among red algae. While appearing vibrant in
colour they are actually well camouflaged in their ocean environment. Nothing is known of
the feeding habits of this species.
