Guidelines for Collection Access

Would you like to access an item in Museum Victoria’s collection?

The Discovery Centre coordinates all requests for access to Museum Victoria's Science, Indigenous Cultures and Australian History & Technology Collections.

All collection access applications must be received in writing. Applications can be sent by email, by post or via our Online Form (our contact details are below).

Please include the following information in your request:

Which object, specimen and/or collection would you like access to?
Do you require physical access to the collection or just access to the collection records?
What is the exact nature of your research and why do you require access to the object, specimen or collection?
Please include any comments that may help with your application, including your time frame.
If your request is professional research on behalf of an organisation, please include the name of your organisation.

Please note: Museum Victoria receives a large number of Collection Access enquiries. The processing of requests can take some time depending on the collection involved and the complexity of your request.

We cannot guarantee that Collection Access will be possible in all cases. Requests are assessed on a case by case basis and professional and academic enquiries receive priority.
