Creating the legend

The images on the documents depict the Australian soldier's supposed links with 'the bush'.

The programmes are from 1916, official Christmas entertainment provided for Australian soldiers stationed in England.

The magazine, Aussie, was printed by the A.I.F. Printing Section for distribution to Australian soldiers in the field. The cover of this 1917 edition draws parallels between life 'at home in Australia' and a soldier's life on the Western Front in Europe.

Christmas invitation.  Christmas invitation.   'AUSSIE' magazine cover.

To think about:

  1. How is life back in Australia represented on the magazine cover? What are the similarities and differences suggested?
  2. Why were representations of 'the bush' selected for these publications?
