Museum Victoria’s Discovery Program is a mobile service that provides access to the museum’s collections for people who may find it difficult to visit one of our venues for reasons that include age, geographic distance, hospitalisation and imprisonment.
These sessions are led by a skilled presenter. Each presentation includes a selection of specimens, objects, replicas and photographs and all of the items presented can be handled. Each session is one hour in duration.
There are 6 topics to choose from:
- Feather Fur and Flippers
Feel the quills of an echidna, the teeth of a Tasmanian Devil and the soft plumage of a barn owl as we encounter some of Australia's unique animals.
- Dinosaurs and Fossils
With the aid of fossils, dinosaur bones, replicas, and photographs, we go back in time to reflect on the existence of these ancient animals.
- Shells
There is an amazing array of shells to be found in Australia, from sea shells to land snails. Wonder at their exquisite shapes and patterns and discuss the animals which make them.
- A Bird in the Hand
A selection of Museum Victoria's ornithological specimens, photographs and fascinating facts will assist you in becoming more familiar with the birds of Victoria.
- Work in the Home
Intriguing and evocative objects from Museum Victoria's collection stimulate discussion and bring back memories of housework, homes and family histories.
- Memories of Childhood
Cast your mind back to childhood days. Remember playing marbles or jacks? Did you have a toodle-um-buc? Have a go at spinning a top.
