Linking with the Community
Museum Victoria is home to the Federation Handbells, which were produced to celebrate the Centenary of Federation.
Schools and community groups are invited to borrow a set of bells for use in festivals, classes and musical performances.
Handbell ringing is a rewarding medium for introducing musical performance to children or adults. Developing individual and team co-ordination, timing and rhythm, handbells enable groups to achieve musical results relatively quickly. Traditional handbell music is written numerically and is easier to read - or a good beginning for teaching staff notation.
The Federation Handbells are cast in bronze and have a unique design and pitch. The bells can be played with a mallet individually or in the style of a xylophone. Each set of handbells covers two octaves.
