The period 1850 - 1901 saw the continued marginalisation of Aboriginal people in Victoria. Coranderrk Aboriginal Station was established near Healesville in 1863. Removed from their country for their own 'protection', the people at Coranderrk struggled to assert their rights.

Photos, records and legislation relating to Coranderrk exemplify government policy and the responses of Aboriginal people to those policies.

Photography, race and representation can also be examined in the context of this case study. Further information can be found in Material Histories - a study of Clothing, control and resistance on missions 1910 - 1920, by Clare Land.

More information about the impact of missions and reserves on Indigenous people in Victoria is presented in Mission Voices - hear our stories, a collaborative project between the Koorie Heritage Trust Inc.and State Library of Victoria in association with ABC Online.
