Protest
Ask most Australians, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, about Aboriginal political activity and they will probably refer to an event that happened within the past 30 years or so. The 1967 referendum, the tent embassy, Mabo and Wik are the things that spring to mind most readily. It would seem that Aboriginal activists only emerged in the late 1960s, that period most strongly associated with protest and the civil rights movement. Since the arrival of the Europeans, Aborigines have fought for their land and attempted to assert their rights. Events at Coranderrk during the 1870s and 1880s provide an example of 19th century Aboriginal political activity. |
