Federation Photographs
Godfrey Henry Myers was a Melbourne electrician, inventor and
amateur photographer. He set out to document all the celebrations
in May 1901. He hoped to be able to sell his photographs commercially,
but, despite the quality of the work, he was unable to compete
with the big stereograph companies like Rose Stereographs.
A set of 72 of Myers' original glass slides has been recently
donated to Museum Victoria by Geoffrey Walker, who has researched
the photographer and his work. A selection of those slides is
presented here.
Collection Items
The items celebrate the achievement of Federation, the opening
of the first Commonwealth Parliment, and the visit of the Duke
and Duchess of Cornwall and York in May 1901. They show a range
of ways in which the new nation was depicted.
