Melbourne's Celebrations May 1901

Cartoonist Tom Carrington's design for an invitation to the celebrations refers to Australia's military contribution alongside British troops in the Boer War. He shows Young Australia, fresh from the battlefield, approaching Britannia for honour and acceptance. Tocsin, a radical newspaper, disapproved. 'The spirit of blatant jingoism . . . has burst out in full vulgar virulence . . . It is a clumsy, tawdry picture . . . inspired by Kipling's drivel on the Old Queen and the Young Queen'.
