Priest's oil dish
Sedre ni waiwai

Elliptical bowl with an ornate handle at the more rounded end of the bowl, standing on three legs. The container was made from sacred vesi wood. Priests' yaqona bowls and oil dishes were uniformly highly decorated. This container probably was a dish for the scented coconut oil used by priests to anoint themselves before ceremonial occasions. When not in use, it would have been suspended on a wall by the handle.
