First settled about three and a half thousand years ago, the Fijian archipelago lies on what is now the border between the Polynesian and Melanesian regions of the Pacific. Today the Republic of Fiji Islands is the most populous island country in the Pacific, containing 332 volcanic and coral islands of which about a third are inhabited.
