Todea barbara

Spreading, slow-growing but extremely long-lived fern (>150 years) with a tree-fern-like trunk to 1.5 m high and up to 2 m across. The leathery bright shiny green frond can be up to 2 m in length.

This attractive fern often has multiple crowns and a stout barrel like trunk.

This Gondwanan fern also occurs in New Zealand and South Africa.

The fern is hardy, often growing in heavily shaded creeks where it can reach a large size.

In open situations the fern is stunted with almost no trunk.
