When interviewing anyone about their own lives, it is important to consider exactly what sort of information you will be asking for and exactly what you will do with that information once you have recorded it. In some cases, the information you discuss may be "general knowledge", whilst other information may be extremely confidential. When you record Oral Histories, you may need to consider exactly what "level" of publication the interviewee is permitting. We have included three categories as a guide to your planning. These categories are:
Use: May be used by the researcher with unrestricted access for use as part of the "Hidden Histories Project" and any future projects. Publication, public performance, broadcasting or telecasting of recorded materials will occur only with the prior written consent of the author. Final edition of the audio or video recording to be used in a project must be approved by the author. Final draft of any transcripts of recording must be approved by the author. Access: May be accessed by the general public under the access policy of the archival library in which the recorded material is deposited. Use: For unrestricted use as part of the "Hidden Histories Project" only. Use in any other project must have written consent by the author. Publications, public performance, broadcasting or telecasting of recorded materials by Museum Victoria and the Department of Education only and must have prior written consent of the author. Final edition of the audio or video recording to be used in a project must be approved by the author. Final draft of any transcripts of recording must be approved by the author. Access: To be accessed by Museum of Victoria and Department of Education personnel. Bona fide students, researchers of Aboriginal culture and heritage and members of the Aboriginal community.
