Postcards

We distributed postcards across Melbourne inviting people to complete the sentence 'I belong when...' Here is a sample of the cards that have been returned to the Immigration Museum. If you would like to contribute, please pick up a card at the Immigration Museum when you visit the Identity exhibition or add your thoughts below.

Identity postcard

I belong when...

I sit in a cafe alongside boardshorts, a beret, bifocals, a burqua & Blundstones in simple harmony! We belong here!

Identity postcard

I belong when...

I'm sharing a joke & laughing at the same thing together with others.

Identity postcard

I belong when...

The question of belonging becomes irrelevant.

Identity postcard

I belong when...

I speak good English without stumbling or stuttering my words or when the other person doesn't need to politely say "I beg your pardon, I didn't get you there" in Australia... Still learning & trying!

Identity postcard

I belong when...

I am with people from my home country. There is an instant rapport when I am with other Kiwis that is hard to replicate with others. Cheers, bro!

Identity postcard

I belong when...

I attend a Collingwood football match and I am seated around other passionate supporters.

Identity postcard

I belong when...

I feel myself reflected in the individuals around me...

Identity postcard

I belong when...

The landmarks become familiar, when I know the name of the street that I am on without having to read the name, when I can wave hello to the people I meet and when I can take visitors to places I feel proud to show them; that's when I know I belong.

I belong when...

I step out at Flinders Street Station, feel Melbourne's chilly cold and I smile. Knowing that it's been 5 years since I've come and I have a bed, friends, knowledge of cafes like Seven Seeds, a design studio to call my own and I say "no worries" like a local. XX Kish.

Identity postcard

I belong when...

I'm sharing experiences with others e.g.

  • Learning with my kids
  • Eating with my friends
  • Crying with my family

Emily.
