ALEXANDRE ANANOU: Hello everyone and welcome to the Immigration Museum in Melbourne, my name is Alex and today I will show you how to weave an East Timorese traditional Tais.
All right, let us first have a look at the materials that we will need today. You will need the weaving template that you can download straight from our website. You will also need a pair of scissors, some coloured pencils, different coloured ribbons and some sticky tape.
We are going to draw and illustrate our weaving mat. Now you will be able to see that we have a shiny face and a matt face on this weaving sheet. Now we want to ensure that the shiny face is facing up and then we are just going to use different coloured pencils and we are going to start drawing different pictures.
Now use your imagination, you could draw a picture of yourself, a picture of your family, you could use some Timorese patterns as well. Now, just ensure that you draw your picture within this little frame here which is right in the centre of your weaving mat.
This is where we are going to start with the weaving. Now what we do is we are going to use the pair of scissors and we are going to use some of the coloured ribbon and we are just going to cut approximately an arm length of that ribbon.
Now I am going to start with the purple one and then we are going to weave this ribbon through a work weaving sheet and the way I am going to do this is I am going to weave my ribbon above then underneath the strip then above the strips and then underneath the strip and I am going to carry on doing this all the way until I have reached the end of my weaving sheet.
Okay great, now I am going to use some blue ribbon and what you really want to do as well is alternate the pattern of the weaving.
So what I mean by this is that we have started weaving above then under, above then under, above then under our weaving sheet and what I am going to do now is I am going to start to weave under the strip just the opposite way I did with the other ribbon so I am going to start under the strip, go above the strip, under the strip, and so on until I reach the end of the weaving sheet and so as you can see this is really where your weaving sheet comes alive with different patterns and different colours.
Okay step number three now we are going to tape those ribbons onto our weaving sheet so how are we going to do this? We are going to turn our weaving sheet around and then we are going to trim the ends of those ribbons on both sides.
All right, there we go, beautiful and now we are just going to use some sticky tape and we are going to tape those ribbon bits onto our weaving sheet, nice and secure and what we are going to do is we are going to carry on doing the weaving all the way to the end of our weaving sheet and make sure that as you go along you tape the ends of the ribbons onto your weaving mats. I am going to take another piece of ribbon and I am just going to carry on doing more weaving until I reach the end.
Okay great this is it, this is my Timorese Tais but yours can be totally different. Use as many different types of ribbon as many different colours as you like.
Be creative, use your imagination, you might want to give this as a present for your family or friends and happy weaving!
