Whelan the Wrecker

Demolition was big business in the 1950s. Whelan the Wrecker's sign seemed to be everywhere. In a frenzy of new construction, many of the city's Victorian buildings crashed to the ground.

By the 1970s, people were arguing that the remaining old buildings should be kept. The National Trust, building unions and others fought to save Melbourne's distinctive character.
