Geological Time Periods

The evolution of life and landscapes happens over vast amounts of time. To understand the scale of time for these changes, we look for evidence in layers of rock. Events like volcanic eruptions, animal extinctions , periods of sediment deposition and ice ages leave distinctive traces in layers of rock worldwide. These traces are used to match rocks of the same age across the earth and to define units of time known as periods.
