Goods were weighed by moving the counter-weight or ‘poise’ along the beam until the beam is horizontal. The weight of the goods is read from the scale marked on the beam. Poises were often decorative, in the shape of gods, men, women or animals. Perhaps this one was designed to resemble the owner of the scales.
