Object: Stereoscopic photograph

Stereoscopic Photograph, 1903 “Looking into the Awful Crater of Vesuvius”

One of a set of stereoscopic photographs from the Underwood Travel Library.

Combining a set of 100 stereoscopic photographs with a guidebook and ten maps, the Underwood Travel Library promised armchair travellers ‘experiences which are very close to those obtained from actual presence in the places’.

When the two photographic frames are viewed with a stereoscope, a three-dimensional image is seen. The illusion of depth is created by a slightly different image to each eye. Notes on the reverse detail the geography, history and highlights of the scene portrayed.
