The Melbourne Story exhibition opened in March 2008 and contains over 1,200 objects exploring Melbourne’s rich social, cultural and physical history, from contact with Indigenous people to the present day.
What jobs are associated with particular eras in our city’s past? How does work impact on the environment? How is employment influenced by technology? These questions introduce students to key economic concepts within a historical perspective.
The staff led element of this session provides students with the opportunity to observe and interact with material objects that reflect working life in Melbourne since colonisation. Students work in teams to uncover the story behind objects found in worker’s bags from key time periods of the exhibition.
This activity is followed by a self guided session; a discovery trail into the evocative stories of the Melbourne Story exhibition. The activities will support integrated learning tasks and is connected to outcomes in all strands of VELS at level 4 and 5.
