ZEOLITE MINERALS OF VICTORIA

Gmelinite crystals on analcime from Flinders, Victoria

Sixteen zeolite species have been recorded from approximately 40 localities across Victoria. While the majority of occurrences are within Tertiary basalt sequences, there are occurrences within sedimentary and granitic rocks. There are many historical collecting sites around Melbourne with similar recent material collected from a prolific quarry at Bundoora. At Flinders spectacular gmelinite crystals have been obtained, while at Phillip Island excellent samples of ferrierite have been collected. Following on from the publication Zeolites of Victoria (available from the Mineralogy Section) new sites have been investigated.

The following zeolite species have been recorded from Victoria: analcime, chabazite, cowlesite, ferrierite, gmelinite, gonnardite, heulandite, laumontite, levyne mesolite, natrolite, offretite, phillipsite, stellerite, stilbite and thomsonite.
