Rocks of Palaeozoic age form the highlands of Victoria, extending from the Grampians in the west to East Gippsland. The majority of these rocks, at least those older than 370 million years, were deposited in the sea.

The Palaeozoic Era is divided into six periods: Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian.

In Victoria, fossils are most readily found in rocks of the Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian Periods.
