As the digger excavated the 6 metre deep hole for the water tank, the archaeologists were keeping watch over the site. To their delight, the remainder of the outline of the kiosk footing was found.

Apart from this, the finds were very similar to those from the archaeological dig—more broken crockery and bottles from night soil fill.

Back in April, Con Papageorgiou of Irwin Consult explained the plan for the structural engineering of the new western forecourt. To see photos of this work underway, see Anne's recent blog post 'Digging commences'.
Please note that since this interview was conducted the decision was made to have one single, large tank rather than a number of smaller arrangements.

Digging a 6 metre deep hole for the water tank has commenced. Our contractor, 2Construct, got off to a great start before the rain came which brought a temporary halt to the digging. However, work continued on the relocation of a concrete ventilation shaft to make way for the 1880 circular driveway.
