30 November, 2009 11:44 by Megan

On Saturday 14 November we invited the public to a dig Open Day to reveal exactly what was happening behind the hoardings and in the trenches. Watch the time-lapse footage of visitors walking around the site, viewing the archaeologists at work and inspecting some of the artefacts found on site.

Week 4 time-lapse footage

27 November, 2009 13:49 by Megan

Throughout week 4 of the dig the archaeologists are hard at work digging trenches and hand excavating the site. Slowly but surely artefacts begin to emerge from beneath the asphalt. The team discover different soil deposits, artefacts from night soil trenches, the edge of the circular driveway, a brick plinth footing and timber pad.

Week 3 time-lapse footage

27 November, 2009 13:46 by Megan

Watch the third week of the archaeological dig unfold through the time-lapse camera! Following on from week 2, the remaining asphalt is removed to show a number of different surfaces beneath. Lighter and darker patches of ground indicate various soils, compacted rock surfaces and further asphalt.

At approximately 1 min 20 sec the archaeology team begins arriving on site and shipping containers are delivered to house supplies. By 2 min 20 sec you can see the team measuring and mapping out the dig according to the research design.

Media coverage

23 November, 2009 11:42 by Megan

If you were up early this morning you might have heard Dr Charlotte Smith talk with Red Symons about the dig on ABC radio. The segment can now be heard online and is well worth a listen. Charlotte talks about the significant finds made during the archaeological dig and the likelihood of finding remnants of bratwurst eaten at the German Kiosk!

The Age also published an article about the dig today. Kate Lahey’s article ‘Digging deep for the secret garden’ talks about ceramics and oyster shells found in night soil trenches, the German Kiosk and the plan to replicate the German Garden.
