Chemical Reactions

Chemical reactions are everywhere.

They occur when:

• stalagmites form
• we get energy from food
• wood burns
• steel is produced

Chemical reactions are processes that change one substance into another. Some of these changes can be surprising. For example, mixing some chemicals causes spontaneous combustion.

Both the everyday and the surprising chemical reactions can be explained by the making and breaking of chemical bonds.
