Making a polar sundial

Sundials have been used to tell the time by for more than 5,000 years. The ancient Chaldeans and Sumerians used the shadow cast by the Sun to tell the time and the date and were the first people to divide the day into 24 hours, the week into seven days and the year into 12 months.

There are many different types of sundials. This activity gives detailed instructions on how to make a polar sundial.

What you need

  • Download student activity (menu at right)
  • Photocopied A4 sheet of the sundial
  • A4 cardboard (1.5mm thick)
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors/stanley knife
  • Protractor
