 The
Sunshine Harvester Works changed the face of farm mechanisation and led to the
establishment of Australia's broadacre wheat production on a scale never before
envisaged.
The new technologies increased the size of farms,
and changed the types of crops grown, the methods
of farming, and the way in which land was used.
The company introduced many world-first innovations,
with significant benefits to farmers.
However, these new technologies also pushed the
frontiers of farming into the fragile soils of
marginal lands and encouraged an unquestioning
faith in mechanisation. The delayed cost of these
practices is only now emerging in various forms
of land degradation. |
