Solomon Islands canoe
19th century
Early European visitors to the Solomon Islands remarked on the beauty and grace of the canoes found there. Both prow and stern carried designs of inlaid shell, and no two canoes were decorated in the same way.
This vessel was a head-hunting canoe, able to carry about 18 warriors. In 1901, it was actually on a search for heads when the colonial administration of the area had the canoe seized.
