Objects from the Department of Psychiatric Services
1870s1940s
Objects collected from several Victorian psychiatric institutions tell a sad story of neglect and the lack of political will. Much of the museum’s collection was assembled during the 1950s by Dr Charles Brothers who sought to bring about reforms.
Strict routines were put in place in the asylums, with the aim of ‘imposing order on chaotic minds’.
