Cuc Lam’s suitcase
1970s
In 1978, Cuc Lam fled Vietnam with her husband, Minh, in a rickety fruit and vegetable boat. Her suitcase symbolises the individual and collective memories of thousands of refugees now living in Australia.
Cuc Lam sacrificed her wedding ring to buy the case so that she would not arrive in Australia empty-handed.
