Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world, and yet we are one of the highest consumers of water per capita. A key to creating a sustainable water future is to change the way we think about and use water in our daily lives.

This site looks at 'water smart' homes from across metropolitan Melbourne, and celebrates the extraordinary ways in which individuals and families are leading by example—in reusing, reducing consumption and revaluing this precious resource. Case studies outline practical techniques and solutions households have implemented in order to conserve and recycle water in their homes and gardens.

Information about current events, resources and the background to the project are also provided. View the latest transcripts on the forums page.

The Water Smart Home is a community-based project, funded by the Smart Water Fund.

How do you save water around the home? Museum Victoria is interested in finding examples of water-saving households from around Melbourne, a selection of which will be put on this website. Go to Your Story for more information.
