With up to 50% of domestic mains water in urban areas being used on gardens, significant water savings can occur in this area. In addition to using new sources of water (greywater or rainwater), there are a range of strategies to assist in reducing the water requirements of gardens.
These strategies include: design of the garden, placement of plants, use of mulch and other moisture retention materials, watering methods and irrigation systems. The stories featured here also offer a sense of how we can rethink our approach and attitudes to gardening and how we use water.
