Austrian Lloyd was founded as an insurance company in 1833 and when Trieste became part of Italy in 1919 the company name was changed to Lloyd Triestino. A shipping section was established in 1936, and Lloyd Triestino became one of the world's biggest shipping companies.

After World War II Lloyd Triestino re-established its Australian service with existing ships and began a rebuilding programme ordering seven new liners. Of these new liners three were for the Australian service, launched in 1950 these three ships became known as the Treistino Trio.

The first to be built was the Australia launched on 21 May 1950, departing Trieste on 19 April 1951 and arriving in Melbourne on 17 May. The second ship Oceania launched on 30 July 1950, departed Genoa for its maiden voyage on 18 August 1951.The third, Neptunia, launched on 1 October 1950, departing on its maiden voyage on 14 September 1951 and arriving in Brisbane on 18 October.

In 1958 all three ships were withdrawn from service for a refit – air-conditioning was extended throughout the entire ship and accommodation altered to be suitable for 136 first class passengers and 536 tourist class passengers. From October 1960 Neptunia began operating as a single tourist-class ship; however the Australia and Oceania were not altered in this way.

In 1960 Lloyd Triestino placed orders for two new liners which would be twice the size of the existing Australian fleet and were built to replace the Triestino trio. When these new ships entered the trade in 1963, Australia, Oceania and Neptunia were withdrawn from the Australian trade and transferred to the Italia line. The Australia was renamed the Donizetti, Oceania renamed Rossini and Neptunia renamed Verdi.

The Triestino Trio had all emerged from the same shipyard in the 1950s and spent their entire careers operating together; they ended their careers in La Spezia, Italy within months of each other. Donizetti and Rossini were laid up in late 1976 joined by Verdi in January of 1977. All three ships were offered for sale with Donizetti and Verdi purchased by shipbreakers in June 1977. Rossini was moved to another Italian company, Tirrenia, but with no use for her she was also sold to shipbreakers in September 1977.

I travelled from Perth to Italy on the Lloyd Triestino's Gallileo in 1969 with my family when I was 6. Still have many vivid memories of the trip, especially going through the Panama Canal.

I remember quite well migrating to Australia on the Lloyd Triestino's Australia in July 1954. What an adventure.

I was eight years old when I sailed on the Oceania with my parents and two brothers, from Genoa to Melbourne, in November-December 1952. Was that its second voyage out? I can see the ship's sleek white line in my mind. I can recall to this day the warm smell of freshly baked buns and the two varieties of red wine, one dark, one light, always standing in decanters on the long dining tables (tourist class, I guess). We were among the few non-Italians on board, I was told. Other things that stick in my memory include the dry hot passage through the Red Sea, the ritual by the swimming pool when we crossed the Equator (King Neptune rather terrified me), and transferring onto lighters for a day trip in Ceylon, as it was then, and the amazing sight of bananas and monkeys in the trees. Many people got sea-sick crossing the Great Australia Bight. Does anyone else have memories or information about that trip? I'm doing research for a possible memoir.

I traveled as a 9 year old on the Neptunia in 1963. I still remember running on edge of my feet on one of the decks while the ship was rolling from side to side in a storm.

Please excuse me adding some information, the shipping department of the Austrian Lloyd, Lloyd Triestino´s predecessor, was established 1836 (not 1936). The Austrian Lloyd was the sixth biggest shipping company in the world, the LT label was a matter of just changing names and relieving some of the company´s leading managers.

I was 16i when I arrived in Melboure with my mum in 1957 ..it was not a pleasant trip in dormitory and I vividly remember been sick most of the time .we where the first ship to go through the Suez Canal .,after the war in 1956

Ich war an Bord der Victoria mit 7 Jahren und wollten von Bombay nach Triest. Wir kamen bis Aden, als der Sechstagekrieg ausbrach. Der Kapitän informierte die Passagiere über die Lautsprecheranlage, daß wir leider nicht durch den Suezkanal fahren könnten und stattdessen um Afrika fahren müssten. Es folgten sechs aufregende Wochen auf See, die ich mein ganzen Leben nicht vergessen habe.

I was 5 years of age on board the neptunia in 1957,vivid memories of king neptune, crossing the equator(bit scary) the waves splashing against the portholes,suez canal and its wrecks,great adventure at 5 years of age,must have nurtured my love for the sea.

My mother,2 year old brother and myself aged 7 came to Melbourne on the Neptunia in March 1957. While for me it was an amazing adventure from Calabria Italy to this other side of the world, the long trip around Capetown had its drawbacks. Two of the 4 1/2 weeks were spent in the infirmary with the flu. To entertain me, my mother bought me a deck of unfamiliar playing cards with Jacks, Queens, Kings and Jokers. If we were late returning from a port of call and missed dinner, bad luck. We went hungry. Crossing the Mediterranean on one day the sea was so rough I was knocked off my dining room chair and sent ike a bowling ball across the room. We had a cabin in tourist class but a female family friend in her 20's disliked her third class dormitory and at times annoyed me severely by sleeping in my bed (hey, I was 7, remember?) We saw blacks in Africa, kids drinking from a communal tap in the unpaved dry port. In Fremantle, we set foot on Australian soil. Mum was desperate for ingredients to make a salad, an antipasto. So we went into a grocery store where she asked for "antipasto". The bewildered shopkeeper searched and returned with toothPASTO. Our first encounter with the strange new language. Nerve-racking moments through customs in Melbourne. I had contraband in my pockets---a small wooden toy spinning top. Relief when for reasons not apparent to a 7 year old, it was declared ok. Those cattke-truck ships were tiny and spartan compared to today's cruise ships. But they offered passage to a new life with the hope it had to be better than the one left behind...often at the expense of never seeing those left behind, ever again.

in the story above, the trio were replaced with two new ships, I suspect they were the Angelina Lauro and Achielle lauro two sister ships, I know they were part of the Lloyd fleet would this be correct?

Achille Lauro was the former dutch liner m.s. Willem Ruys, based in Rotterdam from the Koninklijke Rotterdamse Lloyd. The Achille Lauro became world known during the high jack at sea in 1985 and the fire and down fall in 1994. The Angelina Lauro was the former dutch m.s. Oranje from the dutch liner Nederlandse Stoomvaart Maatschappij (Netherland Line)and based in Amsterdam.

In July / August 1958 we embarked in Jakarta on board of the m.s. Australia. We are my mother, youngest brother 1 year old, my sister 7 years old, my brother 9 years old and myself 11 years old. Most of the time my brother (9) and I explore the ship. My sister stay at my mother most of the time in the cabin, sea sick. One day we follow the nursery teacher. Suddenly she disappear through a door and we follow her. Whow it was the engine compartment and the path were we walk was a few storeys high. Suddenly the nursery teacher turn her head back and saw us and sent us back. What a pity. But there was anorher place ont the ship were we entered. No one saw us and we saw a sort of gate in the ship skin. It was wide open and we walk to the gate. We saw the suezcanal. It is rather stupid that there is no railings. The skindoor was open and if you are not carefully you splash into the sea. How ever most of the time we were sea sick. In particular in the Indian Ocean. Most of the time we were to sick to go to the dining room. We only go to the dining room for the Italian ice cream. After all the dinner was always spaghetti with cheese most of the time or with tomato sauce. We disembarked in Napoli (Napels). If someone know who was the nursery teacher, her name and if she is still alive. I am now 70 years old. At that time in 1958 I was 11 years old and the nursery teacher was I guess 27 years. Someone of Lloyd Triestino who knows I shall appreciate it. She was slim, tall about 1.80 m and natural blond. A true bella ragazza biondina Italiano. If you can track her for me, I like to know her address or e-mail and I like contact her.

I forgot something important to say. We were in the tourist class and our cabin was in the neighbourhood of the administration desk and the cabin numer was if I remember me well 333.
