Married to the Job vodcast - Nick Crotty

Something old
In the Collection Store, I'm surrounded by old things. But I'll show you one of the oldest things here at Scienceworks…the Pumping Station.  It started operation in 1897. This is where Melbourne's sewerage was first pumped. There are still five huge steam engines here plus over 1,000 original tools.

Something new

Not everything in the collection is old. Sometimes we do contemporary collecting, such as this iPhone. In the Museum Victoria collection we have one of the first iPhones and iPods in Australia. The Internet Macintosh Users Group helped the museum collect this material in 2005. These will be kept for future generations for display and research.

Something borrowed

I loved working here during the Star Wars exhibition. Scienceworks borrowed my childhood Star Wars collection to put on display. I even helped install it. I don't collect them anymore but I still love Star Wars because I'm a Star Wars nerd.

Something blue

Something blue…I know something blue. It's an orange with blue mould. Actually I don't usually allow food in the Collection Store but this one's made of wax. We have over 1,800 pieces of wax fruit and vegetables at Scienceworks made by the museum artisans dating back to the 1800s.

That old Pumping Station sure is impressive. And I love that we collect new technology such as iPhones. I was chuffed that Scienceworks borrowed my Star Wars collection. And the blue mould on the wax orange is pretty cool.
