Michael Reason has been interested in museum and material cultures since he was a boy, growing up in the foothills of Mount Wellington in Hobart. Although he began his vocational path in the world of finance, his real passion lay in the volunteer work he carried out in the History Department of Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. He assisted in acquiring and registering new material for the collection, particularly contemporary items, including the bespoke wedding dress worn by Kylie Minogue as Charlene Mitchell in the TV series Neighbours.
He continued working in banking when he moved to Melbourne, but soon found a position at new Scienceworks Museum in Spotswood. After working his way through various positions in the museum, he finally ended up as a curator in the History and Technology Department, now the Humanities Department. The week of work experience he had carried out at TMAG in grade nine had finally paid off.
His pride and joy is looking after the Phar Lap Collection, which included curating two exhibitions as well as writing the book Phar Lap: A True Legend, now in its second edition. He also curates the diverse Leisure collection, as well as establishing the new Social Spaces collection, which has an initial focus on Youth Culture. He has a particular interest in the material culture of performing arts, the media and popular culture.
