Engineering Collection

The Engineering Collection documents history, impacts and achievements of Victorian engineering. It is one of the museum’s oldest collections, with many of the mining models dating from the earliest years of the National Museum of Victoria in the 1850s.

The collection encompasses machinery, engines, steam generation, mechanisms, fasteners, hydraulics, electric power and gas generation and distribution, electric motors, control equipment, manufacturing equipment, machine tools, and drafting and engineering drawings and designs. It includes documentary and complementary materials such as company records, share scrip, patents, drawings, photographs, oral histories, and trade literature. Parts of the collection are also used as working machines and are part of public programs such as Machines in Action Day at Scienceworks, and feature at historic machinery rallies.
