Why leave a bequest?

Leaving a bequest is a practical way to support Museum Victoria. Past bequests have allowed Museum Victoria to expand our natural sciences and history and technology collections. Your bequest could help fund education programs, scientific research and the preservation and exhibition of precious items in the State Collection. A gift in your will is a lasting tribute that will assist us to deliver on our mission to build our communities’ understanding of our history, society and the environment.

How to leave a bequest to Museum Victoria

Making a bequest is a very personal act. You can choose to leave your bequest to Museum Victoria for general use, or you can direct your bequest to a more specific need. If you wish to discuss leaving a gift for a specific purpose or activity at Museum Victoria, please contact Sandie Hall in our Philanthropy Team.

Bequests of any size will contribute to Museum Victoria’s future work and will be gratefully received.

Museum Victoria recommends that you speak to a solicitor and financial advisor about bequest options. For your convenience, we have prepared the following sample wording:

I give to the Museums Board of Victoria (trading as ‘Museum Victoria’) _______________ (a percentage or dollar amount) for the use and benefit of Museum Victoria at its absolute discretion free from all taxes and duties payable in respect of my death, my estate or the administration of my estate and I direct that the receipt of the CEO, President or other authorised officer for the time shall be an absolute discharge to my trustee for the gift.

Message from the CEO

Museum Victoria is Australia’s largest public museum organisation. Our history dates back to 1854, when The National Museum of Victoria, the state's first museum, was established. Philanthropic gifts and bequests have helped the museum throughout our long history.

Each year we take more than 2 million visitors on a journey of discovery through Australia’s social and natural history. Our museums – Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the Immigration Museum – bring Victoria’s cultural, scientific and natural wealth to life.

Museum Victoria is responsible for more than 17 million individual collection items, which form an invaluable record of Victoria’s environmental and cultural history. Museum researchers, many of whom are world experts in their fields, work in the areas of natural sciences, history and technology, Indigenous cultures and museology. This research adds to our communities’ understanding of critical contemporary issues such as reconciliation, biodiversity, climate change and cultural diversity.

Our exhibitions and education programs reach out to more than 291,000 school students every year and our Outreach Program ‘Museum in a Van’ visits regional centres across Victoria. Museum Victoria addresses disadvantage by partnering with Victoria’s diverse communities to promote participation, which contributes to building active and resilient communities.

Museum Victoria’s world-leading research, innovative exhibitions and engaging education programs are made possible by 150 years of dedicated stewardship and enhancement of the State Collection. Museum Victoria will continue to protect and to grow the State Collection for the benefit of future generations and you can help us do so by leaving a bequest.
