Adult Presentations

Adult, Presented by museum staff

Museums Victoria's Outreach Program is a mobile service that provides access to the museum's collections for people who may find it difficult to visit one of our venues for reasons that include age, geographic distance, hospitalisation and imprisonment.

These sessions are led by a skilled presenter. Each presentation includes a selection of specimens, objects, replicas and photographs, and most of the items presented can be handled. Each session is between 45 minutes and one hour in duration and it is a condition of booking that at least one support staff member from the centre attends the presentation.

There are 6 topics to choose from:

Memories of Childhood

Developed for an Alzheimer's and Dementia-specific audience

We look back fondly at a time when childhood was different.

Children's games and entertainment have changed a lot in the past 100 years. We use items from the Museum Victoria collection to look back to a time when marbles, jacks, toodle-um-bucs and spinning tops were an important part of childhood. Participants will be encouraged to share their memories. This program has been developed for an Alzheimer's and Dementia-specific audience, and our presenters have vast experience and training in presenting programs to people with these illnesses.

The Good Old Days

Developed for an Alzheimer's and Dementia-specific audience

We evoke memories of household work in the mid-20th century.

Using intriguing and evocative objects from the Museum Victoria collection, we look at the objects used in the laundries, kitchens, homes and sheds of families in the mid-20th century. We look at life and leisure and how the arrival of technological advances such as washing machines and television changed life in the home. Audience members will be encouraged to share their memories of housework, homes and family. This program has been developed for an Alzheimer's and Dementia-specific audience, and our presenters have vast experience and training in presenting programs to people with these illnesses.

Australian Animals

A look at Australia's unique wildlife

Australia is home to some of the most interesting animals in the world. Using mounted specimens from Museum Victoria's renowned mounted species collection, we discuss the lives and habits of our favourite mammals, birds and reptiles. Participants will be encouraged to share their stories and knowledge of these amazing creatures.

Shells

A beautiful collection of shells from around the world

Wonder at the variety of exquisite shapes and patterns of shells, and discuss the animals which make them.

Using an amazing array of unique shells from the Museum Victoria Collection, we will discuss how shells are made, what they are used for, and how humans have used them over the years in different parts of the world. Participants will be encouraged to hold our unique collection and share their memories of seaside holidays and trips to the beach.

Dinosaurs and Fossils

Step back in time

With the aid of fossils, dinosaur bones, replicas and photographs, we go back in time to reflect on the existence of these ancient animals.

The existence of dinosaurs has long been a fascinating area for young and old. Using life-size replicas and real fossils from the Museum Victoria collection, we discuss the process of finding fossils, the lives and habits of different dinosaur species, and the ancient time periods when they roamed the earth.

Backyard Bugs

Learn about the fascinating world of bugs and the extraordinary things bugs can do. Live bugs such as goliath stick insects will come along with us for the journey.

The Backyard Bugs program looks at the many fascinating creatures to be found in gardens, parks and backyards. We will discuss the incredible things bugs can do, how they benefit the environment around them, and how to identify different kinds of bugs.
