Victoria’s diverse and vibrant Muslim communities came together to celebrate Islamic arts, design, and culture at this special festival.

This wonderful celebration was inspired by the touring exhibition, Faith, Fashion, Fusion: Muslim Women’s Style in Australia from the Powerhouse Museum, on at the Immigration Museum from October 2013 to June 2014.

The festival program included:

  • Performances of spoken word, qasidah poetry, and percussion, by young performers from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including Abdul Hammoud, Munira Yusuf, Magan Magaan, and the Hilal Qalifah group
  • An on-stage interview between Masterchef contestant Samira El Khafir and Sherene Hassan
  • Creation of a ‘community mosaic’ artwork facilitated by artist Anisa Sharif and members of the Preston Mosque mosaics group
  • A henna painting stall and an in depth henna painting workshop, led by the artists from Chantique Henna
  • Two sessions of the My Dress, My Image, My Choice workshop exploring fashion, modesty, and identity, created by Saara Sabbagh of Benevolence Australia and hosted by Toltu Tufa
  • A showcase of contemporary fashion by local Muslim fashion designers and retailers
  • Calligraphy and artist displays by Aynur Balci, Shakeel Tariq, Bobby Haiqalsyah, and Nada Assaad
  • Community stalls by groups including Sareera Youth, Hume Islamic Youth Centre, and the Islamic Museum of Australia
