The 2017 Australian of the Year is Biomedical Scientist, Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim, a global authority of the biology of nasal cells and leader of the world’s first clinical trial using these cells in the treatment of spinal cord injuries.

State finalists include Andrea Mason, an Indigenous leader from Northern Territory, Andrea brings together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal thinking to create employment, support health and wellbeing, and tackle domestic violence and other social changes.

Deng Adut, a refugee and lawyer from New South Wales, was forced to fight in a war that eventually split his homeland of Sudan. In Australia, Deng is now making a difference as a lawyer and refugee advocate.

Humanitarian, advocate and activist for people with dementia, Kate Swaffer was diagnosed with the disease just before her 50th birthday. Refusing to be defeated by the diagnosis, Kate has transformed tragedy into triumph, becoming a voice for the 47.5 million people worldwide who live with dementia.
